Avocado and Feta Salad is a refreshing Greek salad, one of the popular summer salads you can find around Greece during hot months. It is very popular in Athens and Greek islands, such as the Cyclades. It combines two favorites of Greek cuisine – feta cheese and olives – with this egg or pear shaped nutritious fruit, and in some regions with young spinach leaves.
Avocado is, historically speaking, a relatively new item in the Greek cuisine. But it gained such popularity in last couple of decades that some of the most common salads nowadays obligatory have avocado included. There is even a version of Greek salad enhanced with avocado but, just for a record, that’s not a typical salad for Greeks.
Greeks like to combine avocado with feta since two different tastes match perfectly well especially with a sprinkle of fruity olive oil or some olives. Avocado has a natural fat and doesn’t need any oily enhancer but a few drops of olive oil take avocado’s flavor to its richest point. Olives complement avocado really well because of their flavor and texture.
Another very common yet simple combination is avocado and tomato. Knowing as a good pair from famous guacamole, in the Greek version this “pair” gives space to many other ingredients to create delicious and refreshing summer salads – onions, olives, different types of lettuce, veggies, fruit. Pinenuts usually accompanied avocado in salad given their well-matching flavors.
Having a salad with avocado, no matter in what combination, guarantee you the full and filling meal since avocado is very nutritious, full of vitamins and potassium. And it’s a very good for people who fight cholesterol.

Recipe for Avocado and Feta Cheese Greek Salad
- 2 medium avocados, pitted and sliced
- 300-400 gr. of feta cheese, crumbled
- 12 – 15 Kalamata olives, whole
- Fresh spinach leaves (optional)
- Handful of pine nuts (toasted preferably)
- Olive oil
- 1 lemon
Pill avocados and take the pits out, Slice avocados, sprinkle with lemon juice and salt a little. Set aside. Crumble feta cheese if it’s not already crumbled. Wash spinach leaves if using them. Mix avocado slices, spinach and feta gently, add olives and pine nuts, and add some olive oil and additional fresh lemon juice over the mixture. Serve right away.
